The general public seems to have no idea about the speeds we cyclists are able to achieve on our bikes," says Mark. "Reaching speeds of 80km/h coming off the Waitakere Ranges or 50km/h along Tamaki Drive is quite common. In the city it's fair to say that cyclists travel at speeds almost equivalent to vehicles. This lack of understanding by the public puts cyclists at risk. Cars pull out in front of us at intersections, change lanes without thought about the evasive manoeuvres we have to take. Then there is the young female pedestrian sauntering across Tamaki Drive in her own time. She knows who she is because after hitting her at between 40 and 50km/h on Sunday, I am sure she is suffering some cuts and bruises. Think when you see people on bikes."

If you were watching Australian game show 1 vs 100 on Wednesday on TV One, one of the questions was: "Shakespeare's Julius Caesar said 'Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your (a) swords (b) ears (c) hearts. The player and most of the mob chose "ears" and were told they were correct. But those words were spoken by Mark Antony, not Julius Caesar. The next line is, "For I come to bury Caesar - not to praise him." Shouldn't they have some sort of check on their questions and answers?

A new study from the University of Michigan shows that having a husband creates an extra seven hours of housework a week for women. And the situation gets worse for women with children. The researchers studied diaries to assess how people spent their time. They found that young single women did about 12 hours a week. Married women in their 60 and 70s did nearly twice that amount, while women with more than three children did 28 hours a week. (Source: Yahoo News)

A reader writes: "Philip McAlley, who says that Philippa Sanders can just turn her phone off to stop receiving late-night texts, doesn't seem to realise that Philippa might actually want to receive valid telephone calls - even text messages - during the night. She just doesn't want to be awakened by the screech of an incoming unsolicited text spam, and neither do I."
