Camel beauty pageants, in which camels are judged on their looks and dressage, are held all over Saudi Arabia, reports the New York Times, and as this camel breeder explains to the paper, they sound a lot like the human versions. "See this one?" he asked, pointing to a white female camel with long eyelashes and a calm gaze. "She isn't married yet, this one. She's still a virgin. Look at the black eyes, the soft fur. The fur is trimmed so it's short and clean, just like a girl going to a party."

Media organisations are always hungry for a good story, so you can sympathise with the Dominion Post, which published a story on Wednesday it re-printed from the UK Times. Headlined 'Beware Phones That Can Tell Tales', it was a story about a new computer program called the Social Network Integrated Friend Finder (SNIFF), which allows people to be located by their mobile phones. The paper's nose for news was in overdrive and the chain of check and rechecks missed the fact that the Times printed it the day before, on April Fools Day. But then people in glass houses ...

Mike Jarman of Waiheke Island doesn't accept that the list of words, offered by Journallive.co.uk, aren't used in everyday spoken language. "Why, only today my wife said,'The tot slammed the journalists when quizzed about his association with revellers who had bungled an attempt to fill their coffers, which resulted in a fracas'."

Jeremy Dawson bemoaned being told to slow down when he accelerated towards the finish line at Round the Bays. "I also ran," says Daniel. "And distinctly remember as runners were approaching the finish line they were asked to slow down. Reason being, at the finish line there were solid metal partitions that runners had to go through to get their barcodes scanned by volunteers. So to prevent any collisions, runners were asked to slow down. A wise safety precaution for the situation and for a run that was not a race, but a fun run."
