I thought you might like this one for the "mad Auckland city parking officials' file", writes a reader who is perplexed after receiving a parking ticket for parking in the wrong direction on a two-way road in Westmere at blinking 1.43am. "What was a parking officer doing ticketing furiously in a suburban street at that hour?" he asks. Was he/she out on the tiles, saw an infringement and couldn't let it go? Does the council now have a night shift in operation as another revenue-gathering scheme? Sideswipe will try to find out from the Auckland City Council what its legal hours of work are.

German police are investigating a chilli sauce to determine whether it was so spicy that it was capable of causing grievous bodily harm when used in an attack. Officers broke up a scuffle that kicked off after a 23-year-old wiped his kebab-soiled hands on the stand because the salesman refused to give him a paper napkin. The seller responded by flinging a ladle of sauce in the man's face. The victim's eyes became bloodshot and police are investigating why the dispute broke out. Both men could face charges. The inside word on wheelie bin placement, from Victoria: "Today the rubbish collector knocked over a bin in our street. He explained that if the bins were put out sideways to the street it was harder to knock them over because they had more balance. His advice: Ignore the bins' 'this side to street' sign and put them out sideways, then they are unlikely to get knocked over by drivers or the wind. He demonstrated the science of this with the full bottle/paper bins still waiting to be collected. The wheels held firm. So put your bin out side on to the street. Might make our streets a little less messy, too."

Have you seen the information regarding the upcoming Wagamama noodle-eating competition? asks Martin. "Scoff 4.8kg of ramen noodles in less than eight minutes to win. The irony is that Wagamama espouses positive eating and positive living. Nothing positive about speed-eating and volume-eating."
