Strange but Real Diets:
1) The Cotton Ball Diet involves eating cotton balls - either dry or soaked in gelatin because cotton balls are low in calories, but very filling, so you aren't tempted to eat real food, which contains calories and some other stuff that keeps you healthy and alive.
2) The Sleeping Beauty Diet is based on the idea that when you're asleep you're not eating. This diet involves sedating yourself and was one Elvis used later in life.
3) The Chewing Diet is based on the premise that not chewing enough causes constipation and weight gain. To properly implement the chewing diet, a person must chew each bite over 32 times, then tilt his or her head back and allow the food to trickle down the throat. (Source: Neatorama.com)

A reader shares his Earth Hour experience: "I turned my lights off. It was kind of nice, going off the grid for an hour. I fired up the charcoal grill, lit a couple of kerosene lanterns, and instead of heat from the electric heater (which would have wasted electricity generated by our local nuclear power plant), I made a nice little campfire out back. I think I dumped more carbon into the atmosphere in that one hour than I usually do in a whole week. I'll have to do this more often."

The head of the Taupo Metrification Alignment Project writes:
"A recent update of our database of New Zealand place names has revealed a need for updates that we are bringing to public attention. The board has announced the following recommended changes to the local Taupo area place names. Three Mile Bay converts to the metric equivalent of 4.8 kilometres. Using the Swedish rounding system, this gives 5km. Similarly, 4 Mile and 5 Mile Bays convert to 6.4 (rounded to 6km) and 8km (no rounding necessary) respectively. Due to the general public's reluctance to vocalise the full "kilometre" wording, it has been recommended that the shortened 'K' be used. All future references will therefore be to 5K Bay, 6K Bay and 8K Bay. The board will co-operate fully with council, Post Office officials and others to ensure a smooth transition to these modernised place names."
