Sign of confusion
"Can anyone explain to me the point of the new electronic traffic sign heading west on Great North Rd, just after Pt Chev?" asks Simon. "As useful as it is to know the number of minutes it will take to get into town - given you can't get on to the city-bound part of the motorway when heading west at Waterview - it seems a bit redundant."
Feeling fobbed off
A reader writes: "Am I the only one astonished at the gall of Toyota, and doubtless other dealers, in charging $60 plus GST for the plastic shell for an ignition key? When I expressed astonishment at this, a young man at the parts counter at Giltrap Toyota in Grey Lynn replied, 'I can charge you $350 for a new key if you like'. I told him I thought it rich that Toyota would make a poorly designed key shell that could not withstand even occasional use - my wife drives our car and my key gets used weekly at most - and then charge more than $60 for - what? - 50c worth of plastic? He seemed unimpressed. I know I am."
