Tony O'Brien isn't sure whether the person depicted is falling, having stones thrown at him, or beating his fists against a rock. "Seems they take anger management seriously in Taupo," he says.

Listing coffee crimes on Trade Me: "At a cafe in Pirongia we were informed that a takeaway coffee cup carried an extra charge of 70c. I have never been charged for a vessel to remove my purchase from a premises before. Unsure if this is the norm, we decided to float the idea of selling this lovely solid paper cup with pure plastic lid to see if anyone would pay 70c for it, or if we did get shafted as we suspect. This may be excellent value for those in Auckland or Wellington where we were assured the price of a takeaway coffee cup is much higher."

The New Scientist January 3 edition reports: "The New Zealand Post sold David Blest a small box in which to mail a gift. Its internal dimensions were 140mm x 130mm x 25mm. Outside, it bore the warning 'Maximum weight 20kg'. New Scientist staff has checked Blest's calculation, and that box's volume of the densest material you can buy - either osmium or iridium - would barely break the 10kg mark, though it might break the bank. So what does NZ Post know that modern physics doesn't?" Another first for New Zealand.

H. Beatty Chadwick, 72, has been in jail for 14 years, but hasn't been charged with a crime. In a 1995 divorce hearing, a judge thought Chadwick was lying about $2.5 million in assets - his wife said he was hiding them; he said he lost them in a business deal - and locked
him up for contempt of court. He has been there ever since. Chadwick has never wavered in his story, and after an independent retired judge failed to find any money, Chadwick's lawyer compared the "missing"
money to Saddam Hussein's "missing" weapons of mass destruction. (Source: News of the Weird)
