Queensland Rail refunded passengers in one crash but not another because the second crash happened late in the journey and those people got their money's worth. Two drivers died and nine passengers were injured when the high-speed train hit a truck and derailed at a Cardwell level crossing while travelling from Brisbane to Cairns in November last year. Queensland Rail insisted it did not have to offer the 81 surviving passengers refunds because they had already enjoyed most of their ride when the crash occurred. But the 116 people on the Sunlander were immediately given refunds or a free trip after another fatal crash from Cairns to Brisbane on New Year's Day. (Source: Courier Mail)

Steve (the father of the praying mantis killer) should reconsider," writes Tim. "When his son killed the praying mantis, it was a deliberate act. This is very different from wiping out moths and mozzies against a car windscreen, which is unavoidable. I'd happily kill a fly, but a mantis I'd gently shoo into the garden, where it will kill undesirable insects for me. A mantis is a desirable insect, and Steve's son should feel ashamed for deliberately killing one."

Ross Stevenson writes: "I guess his wife has already accepted the risks her man takes on his bike as he dices with death on Tamaki Drive. In the quite possible event of his cycling demise, I suggest the following be inscribed on his (paid for by ACC?) tombstone: 'Here lies a brave but foolish man who chose to cycle the dangerous roadway instead of the safe footpath bikeway'."

To the reader who thinks that New Zealand has the worst driving standards in the world. "I suggest a quick trip to the United Arab Emirates. No one in their right mind would ride a bike there; you don't even cross the road unless it's absolutely necessary. If you were stuck driving behind someone in a car doing 20km/h under the speed limit you'd be trying to pass them as soon as possible too."

A reader writes about the cafe in Pirongia charging 70c for a takeaway coffee cup: "I order a box of 1000 takeaway cups for $80. Works out to be about 8c a cup." But Jane says: "Maybe a surcharge will prompt more people to take their own reusable container."
