Auckland Mayor Len Brown has conceded that a "significant" number of ratepayers will face a rates rise much bigger than the 2.5 per cent promised to them.
Auckland Council's 10 year budget was passed yesterday by a single vote.
It would see an average 9.9 per cent rise in residential rates, costed at $214 for the average household. However, thousands of ratepayers may face increases of more than $1000, mainly because of large increases in the latest property valuations and a big hike in the last step to a new rating system, or both.
