The New Zealand Land and Transport Agency say a preferred cross harbour tunnel would cost around $3.5b and take 10 to 15 years to build.
The NZTA made the announcement today saying they had given the North Shore City Council and Auckland City Council notice to safeguard a future tunnel route.
The tunnel was one of about 160 options that the NZTA had looked at which included roll-on / roll-off car ferries, sky cabs and mono rails.
But the NZTA says they have no funding for the tunnel at present.
