KEY POINTS:
Auckland's Queen St looked like it had been taken over by the Irish on Saturday as musicians, dancers, little green men acting as leprechauns and hundreds of others took part in the city's annual St Patrick's Day parade. Understandably, the colour green was de rigueur.
The feast day of Ireland's patron saint is always celebrated today, March 17, but because this year it coincides with the Catholic Church's contemplative Holy Week in the run-up to Easter, liturgical ceremonies were moved forward.
Today, bands will play at the Irish Society's hooley in the Eden Rugby Football Club rooms in Sandringham from lunchtime onwards.
