KEY POINTS:
What a waste of money that could be employed for much better purposes. We, the public, have to seek permission to cut trees on our properties so I suggest the council should be answerable to the public. Do we, the public, want the trees cut down? I think not.
- Elizabeth Eklof
It's funny how a council that will make you jump through hoops to merely trim a tree on your own property will so blithely work against their own regulations. Joe Public wouldn't get away from excluding the council from their plans.
- Paul
The existing trees should be saved. Plant more exotics and natives to increase the greenery. This is what people want, we are sick of looking at ugly structures of concrete.
- Cushla Ker
The city council seems to have no concept of economy. Cutting down the existing trees in Queen St and replacing them with some others surely comes into the non-essential category. The total cost will run into hundreds of thousands of ratepayers' dollars. The existing trees do enhance the streetscape - they have already cost a great deal of money. Please leave them alone and reduce ny rates a little.
- Brian Rowe
It may well be true that the council's proposed tree replacement will improve Queen St, but the continued arrogance of the mayor and the council in excluding the public does not inspire confidence. Furthermore, the mayor seems to be confused - either the public were intentionally excluded or they had their say in January. Which is it? The council and its staff need to move on from the idea that rubberstamping proposals that have undergone minimal or no consultation will get the public on side. Numerous community meetings and surveys have shown Aucklanders consider Queen St and the waterfront an important part of the city. It is time the council recognised this.
- Donna Wynd
I think it's all right, because we are getting better and more trees in the end. Short-term pain for long-term gain. Some of the existing trees are too close to buildings anyway, and if the footpath is to be widened then the trees will have to move "outwards" as well.
- Todd
I am absolutely appalled that 27 healthy trees have been condemned to death at ratepayer expense. Worse still, there will be absolutely no input from those expected to foot the bill. How much is this exercise in horticultural genocide going to cost?
