KEY POINTS:
A former employee of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) pleaded guilty in Wellington District Court today to corruption.
Alex Song, 32, a former junior investigator, was remanded for sentencing on October 17.
Earlier Detective Senior Sergeant Darrin Thomson said the charge was a result of a complaint made in early July after a Chinese business couple approached police.
The couple's concerns were investigated and Song was arrested.
After the court hearing IRD commissioner Robert Russell said in a statement it was taking the matter "extremely seriously".
"When carrying out their duties, Inland Revenue employees must behave with the highest level of integrity in order to maintain the trust of the public." he said.
IRD would be conducting its own investigation and would be reviewing all cases dealt with by Song, he said.
He continued to have the "greatest confidence" in IRD employees.
