KEY POINTS:
Claims have been made that convicted rapists Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum's safety in Auckland's Mount Eden Prison could be in jeopardy.
The author of an internet 'blog' on the subject says he has spoken to some inmates at the prison, who say the men have been segregated from the general population.
The author also claims the word inside the prison walls is that there is a call to beat or hurt both Shipton and Schollum.
It is thought that could give a prisoner a badge of honour for their part in any injuries the two rapists may receive.
Assistant general manager for the public prison service, Brian McMurray, said staff constantly monitor all the prison population. He said these two will be treated the same as any other prisoner and placed in the most appropriate accommodation to meet those needs.
Mr McMurray says the Department Of Correctoins is not aware of any specific threats against the pair.
Meanwhile, a Sunday newspaper is reporting that Shipton and Bob Schollum are being kept in a special prison unit. The high security unit, for disgraced policemen and police informants, is at a North Island regional prison, the newspaper reported.
Inmates were under constant protection and their identities were kept secret.
The two were acquitted of kidnapping and rape charges on Thursday, but are already serving time for a previous rape.
Ever since Thursday's acquittal of the pair and Clint Rickards, there has been a raft of new allegations against all three.
However, Schollum's lawyer, Paul Mabey QC, said Schollum had been comfortable in Mt Eden and he wasn't aware of any safety concerns.
