The tall ship R Tucker Thompson has been gifted to Northland's young people as a sail training ship.
The 26m gaff-rigged schooner was handed over yesterday to an Opua-based charitable trust by its builder, owner and master Russell Harris.
The trust aims to run six training voyages a year with a crew of up to 10 young people on each trip.
