To celebrate the first Book Month, organisers are urging people to give their books away.

At events in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch used and new books were donated.

The tomes will be given to Books in Homes, which aims to get books to children who don't have access to reading materials.

Book Month is an initiative of Booksellers NZ to get more Kiwis reading New Zealand books.
