Picture: Aerial attack helps quell fire

Several houses were evacuated along the road to the seaside community of Brighton near Dunedin as a fire spread through a forest last night. The fire was fanned by high winds and covered about 20ha, police said.

Up to four helicopters with monsoon buckets were fighting the fire and police cars were being used to illuminate a river from where water was being picked up.
