KEY POINTS:
Mathematics professor John Kalman, 78, encouraged his students to strive for excellence.
During his tenure at Auckland University from 1964 to 1993, Professor Kalman worked to ensure that the library resources in mathematics were good enough to support first-class research. He encouraged students to study for doctorates overseas to acquire broader experience.
His expertise centred on algebra and logic, and he was instrumental in the founding of the Mathematical Chronicle, later the New Zealand Journal of Mathematics.
