Painter and sculptor Joerg Immendorff, one of Germany's best-known artists, has died. He was 61.
Born in the northern town of Bleckede, Immendorff studied under Joseph Beuys at the Dusseldorf Art Academy in the 1960s. He became involved in that decade's student protest movement.
He spent time in New Zealand in the late 1980s as artist-in-residence in Auckland.
In 2003 he was the central figure in a scandal involving prostitutes and cocaine-fuelled orgies in a German hotel.
