KEY POINTS:
Barry Groom, who ran a marine radio service from his home in Waikuku Beach in Canterbury for 34 years, has died. He was 76.
Mr Groom estimated that during his time, he helped in more than 300 rescues in the South Pacific.
He had set up his sophisticated radio post at his own expense, and manned it from early morning till late at night.
