Barrie Connell, for 50 years a partner in Auckland law firm Meredith Connell, has died aged 74.
Beginning as a court lawyer, Connell moved on to practise commercial and property law. He enjoyed the personal contact with his clients and was happy to provide a service for up to three generations of some families.
But apart from his legal career, it was his work in the community which gave him most satisfaction.
An Auckland Grammar School old boy, he served as president of the old boys' association, was the first chairman of the Headmaster's Council, set up to advise and assist the principal, and was for six years chairman of the board of governors.
His legal knowledge also benefited the Auckland Rugby Union, where he served as honorary solicitor for 40 years. Connell was a member of the Friends of Holy Trinity Cathedral, and also acted as chairman of the General Trust Board of the Diocese of Auckland.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, children Antony, Mary Jane and John, and their families.
