Investigators are examining forensic samples taken from a suspicious fire that engulfed one side of a South Auckland church early yesterday.
Five units battled to contain a blaze in the vestry and downstairs office just before 4.30am at Te Karaiti Te Pou Herenga Waka Anglican Marae Church in Mangere.
Yesterday charred tiles, broken glass and rubble littered the paved courtyard as forensic, insurance and police staff worked to clear the scene.
Fire Service Maori liaison officer Wayne Martin said investigators had taken a number of forensic samples, including a burnt plastic bag that might have caused the blaze.
"Churches don't catch fire, they are well kept, they are a place that people respect," he said. "Churches don't just burn down themselves."
The church's monitored fire alarm system and prompt response from Fire Service staff saved the church.
"Another couple of minutes and it would have probably gone through into the church area and offices upstairs."
South Auckland Maori missioner Morris Rangiwai, who lives on the property, was grateful no one was hurt.
He said the church was the centre of the Mangere community and was confident it could be rebuilt with the support of its members.
