A fire investigator will return to the scene of a weekend fire on Wellington's Mount Victoria today to carry out further investigations. The latest blaze is the third in the area in a week.
It began shortly after midnight on Saturday morning and fire officers say it came dangerously close to scorching Government House and Wellington East Girls High School.
Wellington's Principal Rural Fire Officer, Jock Darragh says the investigator may be able to determine where it started, but it will be harder to work out just what caused the fire.
He says the blaze totally destroyed some vegetation and scorched trees over about three hectares.
He says firefighters returned to the scene yesterday to dampen down hotspots.
