Investigation into crash that killed 11-year-old likely to be lengthy

Police are continuing their investigation into a Ngaruawahia car crash that killed an 11-year-old boy.

Six other young people were injured in the single-vehicle crash on Durham St on Friday, November 18. Nikau Tamati died on hospital.

Police previously said it was not clear who was driving but nobody in the white Toyota Wish was old enough to obtain a driver's licence.

Detective Sergeant Mata John of the Western Waikato criminal investigation branch today said the small town had been greatly affected by the tragedy.

Police were grateful for the cooperation of all those who were assisting with the investigation.

"This is an absolute tragedy for a number of families and the community as a whole," he said.

"All seven occupants of the car are local. Most of them are related, either as siblings or cousins."

John said the investigation would be a long process, particularly as young children were involved.

Specialist staff were working with the children as part of the interview process and to provide the appropriate victim support.

"We have found that at this time of heartbreak, the community has really shown its strength in supporting all those affected," said John.
