An investigation has been launched after a woman was seriously injured walking into the path of a fire engine on its way to an Auckland emergency early today.
The tender was heading along Russell Road in Manurewa responding to house fire at around 4.30am, Manukau Area Commander, Alan Shearer said.
"The fire truck was travelling with its emergency lights on. As the truck came down the road the driver saw the young woman in the road.
"The driver immediately broke and swerved across to the opposite side of the road, trying to avoid hitting her.
"The young woman was stuck by the passenger side of the fire engine."
The woman was taken to Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland, where her condition was described as stable.
The Counties Manukau serious crash team had interviewed four people aboard the fire truck and Manurewa police had spoken to other witnesses.
