An investigation is under way after a woman found what she thought was a piece of glass in a box of Sanitarium Toasted Muesli.
Wellington woman Sarah Howden said she was eating the cereal when she bit into a piece of, what she believed was, glass.
"I bit down several times on something hard in the cereal. I immediately spat it out and found three pieces of aquamarine-coloured, clear glass," she told the Dominion Post.
The 26-year-old said she did not swallow any glass or cut her mouth, but was concerned that Sanitarium had not pulled the product off supermarket shelves while it investigated.
Food Safety Authority (FSA) director of compliance and investigation Geoff Allen said the object had been sent away for investigation.
"It was a very unusual piece of glass: the colour, and that it was small and didn't seem to have sharp edges, and didn't seem to have broken off anything. We're not even sure yet if it is glass."
Sanitarium spokeswoman Kim Stirling said the company would act on any advice that came out of the FSA investigation.
