Invercargill schoolboy injured by electric fence

The Sacred Heart School pupil was taken to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition on Friday.

A specialist trauma team is today at the Invercargill school where a boy was seriously injured on Friday when he was struck in the head by an electric fence post.

After the incident at Sacred Heart School just after 8.35am on Friday, a 10-year-old was taken to Southland Hospital and then transferred to Dunedin, where he underwent surgery.

The boy is out of a coma, but remains in a serious condition.

Today the school is open as normal.

"We've got the Ministry of Education trauma support team at the school, with counsellors," board of trustees chairman Paul Brooks said.

"We are very pleased to hear that he's showing signs of recovery."

Mr Brooks was unable to say how long the trauma team would be at the school for and said the school was assisting police with their inquiries.

Initial investigations had confirmed the incident involved a 9-year-old boy who also went to the school.
