KEY POINTS:
Invercargill police were kept busy overnight after a hit and run left a man seriously injured and five people were injured after a car and taxi collided.
Sergeant Wing-Wah Ng said a man suffered broken legs and head injuries after a ute hit him as he was crossing a road in the city about 4:45am today.
"This vehicle for whatever reason has run into him and then sped away."
Mr Ng said the man's friends alerted police to the accident.
The vehicle was believed to be a white double cab ute.
Earlier a car with three or four occupants crashed into a lamp post after it was hit by a taxi about 3.50am today.
Mr Ng said the car's speed was believed to have been a factor in the incident.
Three people in the car suffered moderate injuries while the taxi driver and a passenger suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the car needed to be cut from the vehicle, Mr Ng said.
