Four members of the current Wairarapa United men's soccer team will be playing on the international scene over the next two months.
Pita Rabo, Lai Gataurua and Petero Dauniseka have all been named in a Fiji squad which will play the All Whites in Fiji early next month while Tony Jamieson will be part of the Cook Island team which contests the South Pacific tournament on home territory in September.
Never before have Wairarapa United had so many of their men's team playing for their countries while still members of their squad and the numbers would probably have been even more impressive but for the fourth Fijian in the Wairarapa United squad, Sakeo Valevou, making himself unavailable for the All Whites game.
Wairarapa United manager Phil Keinzley said the quartet chosen had thoroughly deserved their places in their national sides after performing consistently well for Wairarapa United in a season which has seen them bow out narrowly to holders Western Suburbs in the fifth round of the Chatham Cup, and presently in contention for the runners-up spot in the Capital premier division competition.
"They've all been watched at times by people who have been monitoring their progress and obviously they've made the right sort of impression," Keinzley said.
"It's good to know that playing for us hasn't hampered their chances, in fact it's probably had the opposite effect."
Of more immediate concern for Wairarapa United though as they continue their Capital premier division programme is what is expected to be a difficult assignment tomorrow against an improving Kapiti Coast side at Raumati.
Still in the relegation zone, Kapiti Coast forced Wairarapa United to come from behind for a 3-2 win in their first round meeting and Keinzley says their physical, in-your-face approach always makes them a formidable rival.
"They are the sort of team who are prepared to throw their bodies around, they don't give in easily," he said. "They make you earn everything you get."
The foot injury Valveou suffered in the meritorious 2-2 draw with Tawa last weekend means he will be missing from the Wairarapa United line-up tomorrow, an absence which highlights the versatility of Andy Robertson, who will move back there from striker, thereby allowing Gataurua to join Rabo up front.
Keinzley said Wairarapa United's game plan would revolve around structure and composure.
"Skills-wise we should have a clear edge on them but that won't be enough to win, we need to ensure that we do the basics well enough for our skills to be properly utilised," he said.
