New Zealand's road toll has dropped by two thirds since 1990. Last year it fell to 254 - the lowest level since 1950, when there were far fewer people or cars on the road.
The changes are plotted on this interactive map (below), which records all serious and fatal crashes from 2000 to 2007 and from 2008 to February this year.
