Christchurch police are investigating allegations a staff member at a Christchurch Lotto outlet attempted to scam a $100,000 prize.
It's alleged the person, who was working at BP Mairehau, scanned a number of new instant kiwi tickets and then scratched one they knew had the prize on it.
New Zealand Lotteries spokeswoman Karen Jones says the person then tried to claim the prize through a third party but an investigation revealed a number of discrepancies and the money was not paid out.
Instead the matter has been referred to police and the person is no longer employed at the outlet.
Karen Jones says they're pleased the prize claim procedure has proved robust.
