The latest twist at the Gisborne Cervical Cancer Inquiry is being described as incredible.
The chair of the Inquiry, Ailsa Duffy QC, has issued subpoenas to the Health Ministry and Health Funding Authority in order to gain access to confidential patient files.
The information could show whether there has been mis-reporting of cervical cancer smear tests by laboratories other than the one run by former Gisborne pathologist, Dr Michael Bottrill.
Alliance health spokeswoman Phillida Bunkle says the information the inquiry is seeking should have been checked before and built into the cervical screening programme right from the start.
