KEY POINTS:
Police have launched an investigation into the sudden death of a man after a swimming trip to the Hutt River at Lower Hutt. Police were called to the river last night by the man's friends and family, who had been swimming there.
When they arrived, they found the 22-year-old in a dazed state in the back of a vehicle, said Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Levy, of Lower Hutt CIB.
The man was taken to Hutt Hospital by family members after they became concerned at his condition but he was pronounced dead when he got there.
"At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained," Mr Levy said.
A post mortem today would be carried out today to determine the cause of death.
Mr Levy said police were continuing to talk to the man's family and friends who were cooperating fully.
