KEY POINTS:
Police say it could be another two weeks before they decide whether to charge a driver who killed a top businessman out walking with his wife.
Appliance Connexion chief executive Wayne Burton, 59, was hit while walking in Bucklands Beach, east Auckland with wife Heather 10 days ago.
Constable Bayley Harvey said the father-of-two and grandfather of two from Howick was hit from behind.
"The grass verge is very narrow and there is only room for one person, so he was walking on the road but he was very close to the kerb.
"The car did not mount the kerb but it got pretty close. It struck Mr Burton and he was thrown over the vehicle on to the road."
Heather Burton declined to comment but Harvey said the driver - a 47-year-old Otahuhu man in an East Side Security car - did not stop straight away.
"He stopped at Wharf Rd, about 200m away. Members of the public who saw the accident ran after him but I don't know if he stopped because of that or of his own accord."
Senior Sergeant Mike Stopforth said the Counties Manukau serious crash unit was investigating. It would be two weeks before a decision was made on charges.
