KEY POINTS:
Police have all but dropped an inquiry into an Auckland shooting after the victim refused to lay a complaint or tell police what happened.
The 31-year-old victim was found with a gunshot wound to his leg in the Auckland Domain last week but has consistently refused to talk about what happened.
Without the cooperation of the 31-year-old victim, police said there was little they could do and the inquiry had been all but shelved.
Detective Sergeant Dave Nimmo said the man was thought to have been involved in a drug deal when he was shot, possibly out of the city, and dumped at the domain.
He lay for some time near the grandstand before calling for an ambulance on his cellphone.
The man was from the coastal town of Whangamata on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Yesterday he was charged with to report to police and consuming cannabis.
Police were satisfied he had been shot by someone else and did not shoot himself, Mr Nimmo said.
"We are not looking for a mad man with a gun. It has been over drugs. He has come off second best but won't make a complaint about it."
