KEY POINTS:
Christchurch's Red Bus company is investigating an incident that led to a driver being breath-tested for alcohol at the city's bus terminal yesterday.
A passenger concerned about the driver called police and Red Bus management on a cellphone during a journey from a suburban Shirley shopping centre to the central city yesterday morning, The Star newspaper reported today.
Police met the bus when it arrived at the Bus Exchange in Lichfield St about 11.40am and breath-tested the driver.
Constable Moira Kincaid told The Star the male driver had alcohol on his breath, but was not over the legal limit of 400mcg per litre of breath.
She said police believed the alcohol was residual and that the driver had not been drinking on the job.
He was stood down for the rest of the day.
Red Bus chief executive Paul McNoe confirmed today the company was investigating.
"He was tested and he was under the limit," he said.
Standing the driver down was "normal practice in terms of investigating issues like that," Mr McNoe said.
He declined to comment further.
