KEY POINTS:
Four inmates at Auckland's Paremoremo Prison are likely to face charges after an attack on a fellow inmate at 3.30pm today.
Detective Sergeant Scott Armstrong of North Shore CIB told the Herald the injured inmate was taken to North Shore Hospital but was discharged several hours later.
Mr Armstrong said he could not say what injuries the man received or how serious they were.
However, officers had seized several weapons believed to have included makeshift knives.
More information about the attack would be released in the morning, Mr Armstrong said.
The prison's inmates have hit headlines in recent weeks after a large drug bust involving several prisoners who were allegedly running a drug ring from jail.
Last month, the prison was locked down for two days after a brawl between gang members which saw four inmates stabbed.
Police later seized makeshift knives, and the incident saw renewed calls by the Corrections Association which represents prison officers, for protective vests or the controversial Taser stun guns.
