KEY POINTS:
A prisoner who may lose his sight after another inmate stabbed him in both eyes has so far refused to make a complaint, police say.
John Henry Waara, 35, is being guarded by corrections officers in Palmerston North Hospital where his condition is reported to be comfortable.
He was attacked in his single cell on Thursday afternoon.
Police spokeswoman Kim Perks said it was unclear how many inmates were involved in the attack.
"The victim hasn't wanted to make a complaint as yet," she told Manawatu Standard.
Waara and two others were charged over the high-profile killing of a 16-year-old boy in 2002.
Wallace Whatuira was found shot dead on the front lawn of a Highbury property on Waitangi Day, 2002.
But the case collapsed at a depositions hearing in July 2002, when the Crown's key witness, a 16-year-old relative of one of the accused, refused to identify the killers in court.
