Serial prison escaper Kevin Polwart was found with a mountain bike and wearing full exercise clothing in an Auckland cemetery, police have revealed.
The 49-year-old was sent back to jail this week with police and his lawyer still baffled about where he hid for 50 days after his Auckland Prison jailbreak in December.
Police assume he was getting around using the new mountain bike he was found with at the Symonds St Cemetery.
They are keen to hear from anyone with information on where the bike came from.
Detective Sergeant Kim Libby said Polwart was wearing a fluorescent yellow jacket, cycle shorts and a helmet when he was recaptured after a tip from a member of the public.
He had a backpack with a puncture repair kit inside as well as a letter addressed to the New Zealand Herald which outlined his reasons for escaping.
The convicted armed robber said he was afraid he would not get parole when he was eligible next year and he was trying to show authorities he was not a danger to the community.
In the North Shore District Court on Monday, Polwart had an extra nine months added to his 16-year sentence.
A Corrections investigation into his escape is continuing.
