KEY POINTS:
Police and the Department of Corrections have launched an investigation into an attack on a prisoner at Upper Hutt's Rimutaka Prison leaving him in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital.
Police said the prisoner was attacked by a fellow inmate with a pool cue in the prison's minimum security faith based unit on Sunday afternoon.
The attack happened after following a dispute while playing pool
Wellington Hospital said today the man had serious head injuries and his condition had deteriorated.
He was in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.
