A prisoner who escaped from Waikeria Prison in Waikato early this morning is dangerous and should not be approached, police say.
William Katipa, 43, escaped the prison's medium security unit by scaling a security fence at about 3am today.
A second prisoner who attempted to escape was caught by prison staff.
Katipa was described as Maori, about 180cm tall and of solid build with copper-coloured wavy hair.
He was clean shaven with a dark complexion, and it was not known what he was wearing at the time of his escape.
He has a tattoo of an eagle on his neck and a tattoo of a glove on his forearm.
He had an extensive criminal history, with more than 20 convictions for sexual attacks, violence and burglary, police said.
Katipa had links to the Bay of Plenty and Pukekohe areas and police believed he may be headed there.
He should not be approached and any sightings should be reported to police by calling 111 immediately.
