It was not all bad news for Dalefield in their 8-3 defeat by Hutt in the Wellington premier division men's hockey match played at Clareville on Saturday.
Up against a quality side lying second on the competition table sixth-placed Dalefield started rank underdogs but they trailed by only one goal, 3-2, just after halftime and were playing with enough spirit and determination to suggest a close finish was in prospect.
Unfortunately, a cut caused by a stick to the head led to the outstanding Daniel Van Woerkom leaving the field and his tenacity on defence was sorely missed by Dalefield, a situation compounded by the absence of Liam Workman.
"They (Hutt) got away over the latter stages," Dalefield manager Dave Blackwood said.
