A 19-year-old woman who suffered serious spinal injuries after a collision between a car and a rubbish truck in central Auckland today was not wearing a seatbelt, police say.
The crash happened at 5.30am on Beach Road in the central city.
Six passengers were in the car, including the woman who was a back-seat passenger.
The car collided with a rubbish truck, which was doing a U-turn in the middle of Beach Road, said Auckland City police inspector Chris Robinson.
The car was travelling at speed when hit the rear of the truck and the woman, the only person seriously injured, was flung forward by the impact.
"I don't know if the others were wearing seatbelts, but she was the only one who received injuries," Mr Robinson told NZPA.
She was taken to Auckland Hospital where she is in a serious condition.
The other occupants of the car received minor injuries while the rubbish truck driver was uninjured.
The serious crash unit is investigating.
