A woman had to be airlifted to hospital after she fell while on the Tongariro Crossing this afternoon.
The Taupo-based Greenlea Rescue Helicopter flew the woman to Taupo Hospital.
Pilot Nat Every said the 69-year-old woman had a badly injured wrist. She was at the highest point on the track and it was also the most distant point from the road.
Mr Every said weather conditions at the time were windy and cold with passing cloud.
"Fortunately the helicopter was able to briefly land near the woman who was flown to Taupo Hospital."
