Life Flight Trust was called out to the Wairarapa coast on Monday afternoon to assist a rider who had been thrown from his horse.
The teenage rider received moderate lower leg injuries when his horse reared and then fell on him.
A Westpac rescue helicopter operated by the trust was able to land in a paddock next to the injured teen.
An ambulance from Masterton was already on the scene treating the rider, who was transported by helicopter to Wellington Hospital.
