KEY POINTS:
A man who has been lying injured in Canterbury high country since falling 200 metres down a mountainside two days ago is now in Christchurch Hospital.
Inspector Warren Kemp of the police southern communications centre confirmed the main had now been recovered by rescue helicopter and flown to hospital.
Constable Carl Pedersen of Twizel police told NZPA one of the man's companions walked for 24 hours to raise the alarm after the accident, which happened about 7pm on Tuesday in the Havelock River area.
The man was thought to have suffered at least two broken ankles and black eyes.
Two walking companions and members of an alpine group were stayed with the injured man, Mr Pedersen said.
The Havelock, an alpine river in the Cloudy Peak Range, feeds the Rangitata River.
