A man found with life-threatening injuries outside Foxton Police Station last night had been dumped from a vehicle, police say.
Acting Detective Sergeant Johnny Oram said today police were trying to find the scene where the 19-year-old was viciously assaulted.
Two officers inside the police station heard the man's moans and discovered him lying unconscious about 11pm.
It was not known how long he had been lying there.
The victim was in a stable condition in Wellington Hospital but his injuries were potentially life-threatening, Mr Oram said.
The vehicle the man was transported in would have signs of blood inside, and the scene of the assault would also have signs of blood.
It was too early to say whether a weapon was used in the assault, he said.
There was no suggestion at this stage the incident was gang related.
Anyone with information should contact Detective Johnny Oram on (06) 366 0565 or the confidential crime line (06) 366 0528.
