Injured driver cut free after stockcar crash

A stockcar driver has been injured in a race at the Baypark Family Speedway in Tauranga tonight.

Baypark Family Speedway promoter Bernie Gillon said the man was injured after his vehicle collided with another stockcar.

""He was taken up the wall fairly heavily," Gillon said.

"He was complaining of bad back pain ... he was conscious throughout. Whenever someone complains of a sore back or neck we take every precaution."

Firefighters cut the roof off the man's vehicle and then freed him.

The man was examined by St John Ambulance staff, who later took him to Tauranga Hospital with reported moderate injuries.

"We hope he is going to be OK," Gillon said.

A Fire Service spokesman said the man had been freed from his vehicle using cutting gear.

A Tauranga Hospital spokeswoman said the man was treated and discharged.
