Injured boxer Peter Williams remains in a stable condition in Timaru Hospital's intensive care unit after collapsing on Sunday just two hours after winning the super-heavyweight title at the national amateur championships.
The Auckland Boxing Association (ABA) says it is too early to speculate whether Williams fought in any unregistered bouts overseas.
Boxing New Zealand is understood to be investigating whether the 27 year-old's head injury was caused by fighting in matches which he then failed to disclose.
But ABA president Gary McCrystal said the injury might have nothing to do with boxing.
"The thing that puzzles us is that he was so well after the fight. It doesn't follow the trademarks of a normal boxer that's been beaten around and then collapses.
"It just doesn't add up...it might be some medical condition that's not been picked up."
