Captain Daniel Ingham led from the front by scoring his first-ever century as the Wairarapa under-15 boys cricket team won their limited-overs match with Horowhenua-Kapiti last Sunday by 77 runs.
Wairarapa batted first after Ingham had called correctly at the toss and openers Mark Cummings and Devon Purvis got them away to a solid start by staying long enough to take the shine off the ball.
It was, however, a superb partnership of 188 runs between Ingham and Matt Stringfellow which put Wairarapa in a commanding position.
Ingham's 111 came off 109 balls while Stringfellow was little less impressive in getting through to 83.
Their efforts were largely responsible for Wairarapa making a healthy 256 from their 50 overs.
Opening bowlers Quenten McKenna and Oliver Burt kept a tight line for Wairarapa with McKenna taking the first wicket in the third over and finishing with three wickets overall.
Horowhenua-Kapiti made a committed effort to reach the Wairarapa total but fell 77 runs short with their last wicket falling in the 48 th over.
"It was, however, a superb partnership of 188 runs between Ingham and Matt Stringfellow which put Wairarapa in a commanding position."
McKenna was the mainstay but several of the Wairarapa bowlers
also tasted success with Jamie
Holmes finishing with two wickets and Daniel Ingham, Sam Davies, Sammy Holmes and Matt Stringfellow one apiece.
They were aided and abetted by some outstanding work in the field with Gordon Reisima and Matt Stringfellow both taking superb catches in the slips and Oliver Burt, Daniel Ingham and wicket-keeper Richard Woolgar all taking two catches.
Wairarapa continues their representative programme with a match against Wanganui this coming weekend.
