Limited-overs cricket always has scope for surprise and that's what Wairarapa College and Rathkeale College will be depending on if the weather permits Umpires Cup matches to get under way in Wairarapa tomorrow.
Wairarapa College will be at home to Greytown while Rathkeale College will host Lansdowne.
The prospects of Wairarapa College testing the star-studded Greytown line-up could well rest on the shoulders of skipper Daniel Ingham, the youngster who made such a good impression in his debut season for the Wairarapa senior men's squad in 2008-09.
Ingham is a player with match winning potential with both bat and ball and against a Greytown attack likely to be spearheaded by Central Stags paceman Seth Rance it is probably his batting skills which will prove more vital on this occasion.
Even on an artificial surface Rance has the pace and the guile to rip apart any club batting line-up and one suspects that if Wairarapa College are to make a competitive score it will be Ingham who leads the way
Greytown's all-round strength is highlighted by them having six players in the Wairarapa senior squad named last week by new coach Mark Brown.....Rance ,Dean Van Deventer, Steve Coleman, Jeremy Anderson, Simon Clinton-Baker and BlakeLyford. And that doesn't include their most successful batsmen in recent times, Mark Childs, who has obviously made himself unavailable for representative play.
Lansdowne were the two-day and limited-overs champions last season and it's difficult to imagine Rathkeale College footing it with a side which can call on players of the calibre of Sam Curtis, Robin James, Alex Treseder, Brock Price and Robbie Anderson,
For Rathkeale to pull off what would be a major upset they will almost certainly need Wairarapa senior squad members Jamie Holmes and Matthew Stringfellow to produce something out of the ordinary.
